Our Story

Storybook Farm is located in Richmond Hill, Georgia. A quiet town on the Ogeechee River, with thick pine forests and waterways throughout, about 30 minutes south of Savannah.

The abundance of natural resources, wildlife and long growing seasons, make farming and raising our family here a wonderful adventure.

Dan and I always knew we wanted to raise our children on a farm. From the moment we met we talked about our dreams of living from the land, a simple purposeful, and fulfilling lifestyle. We have always shied away from the hustle and bustle of a city scene, and in our early years would find farm stays or ranches to visit when we could get away. Through Dan’s Army career, our evenings would be spent reading animal husbandry books, watching homestead channels on YouTube, and trying our hand at skills we COULD develop right where we were. I dabbled in sourdough, fermenting, yoghurt making, preserving, and gardening…when the homestead itch got even worse, I hid a hutch of rabbits in our subdivision back yard and began breeding them for our own meat source… there are some funny stories to uncover from that endeavor.

As our two daughters were born, motherhood filled my every moment, and I began to fall in love with including my girls in every aspect of a hand-made, home-made life. Homeschooling made sense to us, and we have been deeply engaged in Charlotte Mason style homeschool- or as I call it “farm-school”. It is my dream to begin to introduce monthly classes on the farm for other homeschool mamas who want to explore unit based learning on farm/homestead topics! (If this is you, PLEASE email me! I can’t wait to meet you!)

Dan is our farmhouse encourager, enabler and fix-it man. He is patient with my endless dreams and projects, and doesn’t whine when I send him 300 miles one way to buy a cow… only for me to decide she wasn’t quite the right cow… When he’s not at work as a Physician Assistant, he can be found working on my ever growing list of projects, with a smile! He cheers me on when I announce I think we should start hatching our own chicks, and spends countless hours doing the research to find the right incubator for the job. He’s a patient and compassionate Daddy to our girls, and steward of our animals, quite frankly the farm would just not function without him!

We are so excited to build community with you and to share the knowledge that we have gained over the past 10 years, as well as the past year on the farm. We are focusing on raising amazing chickens, eggs & honey, while also regenerating our pastures. We avoid medications and vaccines in our animals (unless absolutely necessary) and use alternative natural methods for a wholesome and healthy ecosystem on our farm. We feed all of our animals organic, soy -free feed from New Country Organics, practice rotational grazing of our cows, pigs and poultry to revive the land, but most importantly keep our animals on fresh, clean pasture every day. This practice eliminates disease, sickness and parasite loads, allowing us to raise our animals naturally- we can’t wait for you to taste the difference.

Education is a huge passion of ours. We take every moment on the farm as a learning moment, for ourselves and our children. We are always students, observing and learning from the land and our animals. In farming there is a daily puzzle waiting to be solved, and it takes a farmer who is connected with the rhythms of the farm to ensure the farm grows stronger every day. Our vision is to share our knowledge with you through workshops, tours, farm stays and experiences. We want to give you a glimpse into this life- to answer your questions, to inspire your own homestead dreams, no matter how small or grand. Keep your eye on our event calendar and email, so that you don’t miss the upcoming workshops and homeschool classes we will be offering.

We can’t wait to meet you,

The Bakers

“You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate. That he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man. Oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man’s heart.”

— Psalm 104:14-15
